What is it?
Myofascial release is a soft tissue therapy used to treat musculoskeletal conditions resulting in pain and restriction of motion. It is a safe and hands on approach that involves applying gentle sustained pressure on the myofascial connective tissue restrictions.
Fascia is a thin, tough type of connective tissue that surrounds the majority of structures within the human body. It is theorized that trauma, inflammatory responses and/or surgical procedures can create myofascial restrictions that can produce tensile pressures of approximately 2,000 pounds per square inch on pain sensitive structures that do not show up in imaging (x-rays, CT/MRI scans).
Hands on myofascial release aims to bring about changes in the myofascial structures by stretching or mobilizing adhesive tissues. Your podiatrist moves slowly through the layers of fascia until the deeper tissues are reached. The tissue is loaded with a constant force until a ‘release’ can be felt.
